Front-Running Masterclass: Regal Zeus Wins the Lord Stakes
Regal Zeus Delivers Stakes Glory in the Listed
Lord Stakes at Sandown
Regal Zeus has once again stamped himself as a genuine stakes-class performer, producing a brave and commanding front-running victory in the Listed Lord Stakes (1600m) at Sandown Lakeside.
In a high-quality field packed with depth, speed, and proven black-type performers, Regal Zeus executed a perfectly planned race to claim one of the summer carnival’s key features — a win that rewarded patience, precision planning, and faith from his loyal ownership group.
A Race Won by Strategy and Strength
From the outset, the plan was clear.
Jump cleanly.
Roll forward.
Control the tempo.
Regal Zeus did exactly that.
Beginning well from the barriers, he quickly assumed his customary position in front, allowing Jye McNeil to dictate terms aboard the powerful gelding.
Once settled into his strong, rolling rhythm, Regal Zeus was able to take the field out of their comfort zones — a scenario that plays directly to his greatest strength.
Approaching the turn, McNeil asked Regal Zeus to gradually increase the pressure, stretching the field and forcing his rivals to chase.
When challenged late by the fast-finishing St Lawrence, Regal Zeus showed his trademark toughness, refusing to yield and holding on strongly to the line.
It was a textbook mile performance on the Lakeside circuit.
Targeted to Perfection by John McArdle
A special mention must go to trainer John McArdle, whose preparation of Regal Zeus deserves enormous credit.
This race had been identified as Regal Zeus’ grand final more than two months out, with every run during the campaign carefully structured to bring him to peak fitness on this day.
After a luckless and unsuitable run at Pakenham over 1400 metres, the decision to return to the mile under ideal conditions proved decisive.
On race day, Regal Zeus presented in pristine physical and mental condition, parading with purpose and energy — a clear indicator he was ready to perform at his best.
Elite planning. Elite execution.
A Super Ride from Jye McNeil
Riding Regal Zeus for the first time is no simple task.
He is a horse that must be ridden with confidence and understanding — not too aggressive, not too conservative.
Jye McNeil executed the plan flawlessly.
After studying replays and receiving clear pre-race instructions, McNeil delivered a calm, assured ride, getting Regal Zeus into rhythm early, giving him a brief mid-race breather, and pushing the button at precisely the right moment.
It was a ride that highlighted experience, composure, and race awareness at stakes level.
A Victory That Means More
This Lord Stakes win adds further weight to an already impressive résumé:
- Five-time stakes winner
- Ten career victories
- Closing in on $1 million in prize money
- Proven performer at 1600m
- Ultra-honest, durable, and genuine
Importantly, this was a win achieved on Regal Zeus’ terms, reinforcing just how effective he is when allowed to control a race at the mile.
Now, it’s time to celebrate.
This is what elite racehorse ownership looks like.
