Breaker

Julien Welsh is Regal Bloodstock’s Breaker.
He is a Master horseman and regarded as the leading Breaker in Victoria.
Juliens approach is “We basically just read the horse and let them tell us when they are ready to do certain things and that’s always been my philosophy.”

“It’s just making sure the horse is comfortable in what they’re doing and making sure they want to do what we want them to do.”
“They have to be happy in their environment and I think that’s the main thing and you can’t do that with force.”

Julien uses a two stage system when breaking in Regal Bloodstock horses which has proven to be supremely successful.
Stage 1
The initial preparation here is usually four weeks and then the horses go out for a four to six week break.
Stage 2
The horses then return for another four weeks education to complete the process.

Next Steps
With their breaking in process completed, their next step is often to the stables of their trainer where they will spend some time and be assessed.
The trainer will discuss with Julien whether they think the newly broken in horse will be precocious and whether it will take time.

Many horses might be precocious and physically ready to run as 2YO’s however they are immature mentally. The circumstances of course could also share the opposite scenario.

It is such systems and communications which gives a leading edge to all Regal horses whom have graduated through this system.

When a Regal Bloodstock horse graduates from Julien’s Breaking process they have accomplished a significant amount in a short time, which includes mastering the process of being transported, working on the treadmill, swimming, barrier work and track work.

The transition from living with their mother as a foal in an open paddock to becoming accustomed to daily life and environment of a busy stable cannot be underestimated.

The timing and systems utilised in the breaking / transition process play a critical role in the development, attitude and ultimately overall performance of a thoroughbred.

Unfortunately, this particular area and system is often overlooked or rushed which greatly compromises results.
